PROJECTS: Tarbert Facelift Visitors to Tarbert will notice a number of changes in 2001 as a programme of environmental improvements carried out by HDL and Harris Voluntary Service has improved the look and general amenity of the village. HDL's work was split into 2 phases. A programme of general painting works was carried out in summer 2000 which involved painting a number of prominent buildings within the village. This work was funded jointly by the building owners, Western Isles Enterprise and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, with HDL managing the programme. There is general agreement that the village as a whole looks considerably better as a result of this work. The 2nd phase of the work has focused on improving an area of land lying between the post office, the Free Presbyterian church and the car park in the centre of the village. This area of derelict ground has been tidied up and a picnic area and proper car parking facility provided. A footpath has been created along the side of the Kyles Scalpay road and a set of steps now links the post office and the car park. In addition to this 6 benches have been placed at various sites within the village for general use and new signs welcoming visitors to Tarbert will be put in place shortly. Harris Voluntary Service has carried out complementary work planting flowers and bushes around the site improved by HDL and maintains grassed areas in a good condition through its New Deal programme.
